How to prove you own an Aptos wallet

Aptos wallets can sign a plain message with your account key. We check the signature and that the key still controls the account on the Aptos network.

How it works

The wallet signs a short text that starts with APTOS and contains our message and a one-time code. Aptos accounts can change their key, so the address alone doesn't tell us which key is current: we ask the Aptos network for the account's authentication key and check that it matches the key that signed.

Step by step

  1. Install Petra, Nightly or Pontem from the wallet guide.
  2. On Get certified, click Connect next to your Aptos wallet.
  3. Approve the connection, then the message.

Good to know

  • Accounts with an ordinary (Ed25519) key work. Keyless accounts made with Google or Apple sign-in can't be certified yet.
  • If you rotate the account's key after you're certified, the certificate still shows what was true when it was issued.
  • Tier 3 on-chain screening isn't available for Aptos yet. Tiers 1 and 2 are.

Questions

Does signing cost APT or gas?

No. A signed message isn't a transaction, so nothing is sent and there's no fee.

Why do you check the network?

An Aptos account can rotate to a new key. Checking the account's current authentication key makes sure the key that signed really controls it.

Can I use a Ledger?

Yes, through Petra or another wallet that supports message signing with it.
